Up to 20 million households living in properties in council tax bands A to D in England will receive a £100 payment directly into their bank accounts from the start of January. The funds will appear in the account used to pay council tax. Funding for the policy is generated by raising the bank corporation tax surcharge from 3% to 6% for 15 months, running from 1 January 2027 to 31 March 2028. Chancellor John Healey stated that funding is also available for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland to implement similar schemes.
