Capital return and premium trends
Lancashire Holdings has declared a special dividend of 75 cents per common share, amounting to approximately US$182 million (around £135.1 million), following nine months of steady underwriting. Gross premiums written for the nine months to September 30 were US$1.806 billion (around £1.341 billion), remaining broadly flat compared to the previous year. The capital return follows a US$121 million distribution for the full year 2025 and reflects capital that the Bermuda-based specialty insurer has chosen not to deploy in softening market conditions.
Portfolio reshaping and rate environment
The flat headline premium figure masks a deliberate reduction in inwards property retrocession, which drove a US$61.6 million decline in reinsurance gross premiums written compared to the first nine months of 2025. This contraction was offset by a 5.3% increase in insurance segment gross premiums written to US$836.5 million, supported by energy and marine lines and the expansion of Lancashire Insurance US. The group's renewal price index came in at 93% for the nine-month period, indicating that rates are running 7% below the previous year's levels across the book.
