Job Reductions and Affected Divisions
The Guardian reports that Nationwide announced the 275 job cuts to staff on Wednesday. According to the publication, the reductions will impact the retail division—including mortgage workers—as well as human resources, the chief operating officer’s office, customer operations, communications, and finance. Nationwide stated that no customer-facing personnel will be affected, aligning with its commitment to maintain its 700 branches open until at least 2030.
Context of the Virgin Money Integration
The Guardian notes that this follows a previous round of 600 job losses announced in June. The cuts form part of ongoing integration efforts following Nationwide's £2.9bn takeover of Virgin Money, which completed after being announced two years ago. According to The Guardian, Virgin Money employed over 7,000 staff when the takeover was formalised in late 2024, alongside Nationwide’s approximately 18,000 employees at the time, bringing the group's current total workforce to roughly 27,000.
Leadership Statements and Industry Outlook
According to The Guardian, a Nationwide spokesperson stated that the lender is making a limited number of changes during the integration and offering support such as retraining and redeployment to affected workers. The spokesperson also clarified that the reductions are unrelated to artificial intelligence usage. The Guardian notes that Nationwide is scheduled to publish its half-year financial results on 19 November.
