Record ice loss and melting rates
Prominent glaciers in Colorado thinned dramatically over the past year following the state's worst snowpack on record and record summer heat. The Andrews Glacier thinned by more than 12 feet, the Arapaho Glacier lost nearly 10 feet, and the Isabelle Glacier lost about 6.5 feet, doubling their rate of thinning from the prior five years. Additionally, St. Mary's Perennial snowfield melted completely in September, and researchers warn that remaining glaciers could disappear within the next 20 years.
