Reinsurance Agreement Terms
Markel Group has entered into a reinsurance runoff agreement with Enstar Group subsidiary Cavello Bay Reinsurance Ltd, securing $1.2 billion of adverse development cover for underwriting years 2025 and prior. According to Markel's statement, the transaction involves subject reserves of $4.8 billion, of which Markel will retain the first $2.6 billion and retrocede the next $2.3 billion to Enstar. Markel will obtain $1.2 billion of adverse loss development coverage above the $4.8 billion of subject reserves and pay a risk premium of $120 million.
Transaction Completion and Strategic Focus
Simon Wilson, chief executive officer of Markel Insurance, stated during an analysts' call that the adverse development cover provides greater certainty around the runoff of its Global Reinsurance division and exited lines such as professional liability, allowing the business to focus on ongoing specialty insurance operations. Markel will retain administrative and claims handling responsibilities for the portfolio. Completion of the transaction is expected by the end of the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.
