Property market margins and reinsurance conditions
Competition in the property insurance market is intensifying and margins are narrowing as softer reinsurance conditions put pressure on pricing, according to Markel Insurance CEO Simon Wilson. Speaking during Markel Group's third-quarter earnings call, Wilson attributed the trend to low catastrophe activity and few hurricane landfalls during the storm season, which is expected to drive competitive terms in upcoming reinsurance renewals and feed into the primary market. While property insurance lacks the margins of previous years, Wilson stated that the market is not yet underwater and profit remains available.
Market trajectory and required loss events
Global commercial insurance premiums continued to fall in the third quarter of 2026, with property lines experiencing significant price reductions driven by abundant capacity. Wilson suggested that the market may begin to flatten out through 2027 as the pace of softening eases, though he emphasized that a major loss event would be required to substantively shift the property market and push re/insurance rates higher.
