Cyberattacks on financial institutions
South Korea’s financial industry experienced a second wave of cyberattacks in approximately a month, according to Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin. Institutions including Mirae Asset Global Investments and Daishin Securities reported unauthorized access. Daishin stated that personal and credit information for 38,490 customers was leaked after suspicious access to a remote account opening server was detected on October 17. Mirae Asset reported unauthorized access to business-use web systems, though it noted that retail investor information was not involved and core systems remained operational. Cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb also detected unauthorized access to its internal mobile groupware system and is investigating potential data leaks.
