Collision Details and Response
A high-speed passenger train operated by state-owned Renfe collided with a rival Iryo train between the villages of Los Yébenes and Urda, approximately 60 miles south of Madrid. The incident, which occurred just before 9 a.m. local time, killed at least 64 people and derailed at least two carriages on the Iryo train, halting traffic on the high-speed line between Madrid and Seville. Emergency services, including ambulances, helicopters, and the army's Emergency Military Unit, were deployed to the scene. A Spanish Transportation Ministry spokesperson indicated that initial assessments point toward potential human error by an Adif rail traffic controller.
